if there is going to be a deal, what obama would be willing to give to the republicans on entitlements and medicare and social security. there is push back saying you better not be raising the eligibility age. he was pointedly asking if that was something he would consider. he refused to rule it out. he would not rule it out in the entry. i'm wondering how nervous do you think right now progressives should be about the idea of the medicare age going up in any deal. >> i guess i don't think progressives should be nervous at all. it's not clear he is going to agree as part of the deal because of the push back and all the analysis that is coming out that shows it doesn't save any money in the near term and shifts money from one pocket of the health care system to another. it might increase national health cost fist people 66 or 67 have to go into the regular system and get subsidized under obama care. the thing that no one talks about is typically when you talk about raising the eligibility age under simpson boelgz that proposed that, it doesn't phase in the higher age for like 30 or 40 years. if that

of the day going to show him and the republicans to be weaker and to have less leverage which giving obama more leverage on two things to your question. one is the debt ceiling extension issue which is the point that the president has made. he's not going to allow the republicans to hold this economy hostage. and another round of debt ceiling negotiations. i think he has to hold firm on that. the other thing i think the president has to hold firm on is getting stimulus in this plan. to jared's point, republicans have been making all the arguments if you cut too much you're going to hurt the economy. that's what the democrats said during the stimulus debate which jared was a leader on in 2009. it's a point i think they're still relevant on. >> let me just amplify those excellent points. one thing i have heard and i'm very happy about this is that the white house and these negotiations has been holding firm on the stimulus piece of this package. >> the 50 billion additional. >> there's 50 billion on infrastructure, an extension of unemployment. something like a payroll tax check boost there.

to cover. the reality it seems that president obama is in a strong position. the republicans are going to have to concede at some point. what speaker boehner is doing, democrats may be waiting until january 3rd when he is reelected as speaker to get something done. i'm not sure i have insight on that, but that could be the strategy here. the problem is the president has been flexible. he reduced his target from 1.6 trillion to $1.4 trillion. he moved on the issue of the corporate tax reform which is something republicans wanted. republicans haven't moved at all on spending. they are saying we want you, president obama, to tell us what spending cuts we should propose. that's not the way it works. you are the people who ran all year long saying we need to cut more in spending. tell us where you want to cut, republicans. that's not what president obama ran on. he ran on raising the top tax rate for the top 2%. that's what he wanted to do and what he should focus on. >> let me play what the president said in a new interview with abc regarding taxes. let's play it. >> taxes are going to go

allow that, right? so that is republican leverage, as they see it. unlike them, obama is not willing to destroy the global economy. and so they figure there is no real need to cut a deal now, because if that deal, particularly if they deal includes concessions like taxes, just wait a couple of months, take the debt ceiling hostage and make everybody believe you'll shoot. this is making boehner weaker. it gives haas republicans an excuse to ignore the cuts the deal he makes. they say oh, we'll just wait it out. the concern that boehner will cut a deal that he can't actually deliver, or at the last minute he'll back off a deal because he won't have the votes. the white house, by the way, they don't think the debt ceiling is republican leverage. when you talk to them, they are all steel right now on that subject. their position is simple, and they deliver it in the tone of voice bruce willis reserves for talking to terrorists. they are not negotiating. not on that. if republicans go over the cliff and try to open up talks for raising the debt ceiling, the white house says they will not
